MIDTOWNER THE BULLETIN OF ROTARY BANGALORE MIDTOWN - JUNE 2 0 1 9......................................................PG: 1
Doctor, these profound words from the Bhagavad Gita, describe in a
nutshell your whole life’s work.
In a world, where everything comes at a price, you provide free treatment.
In a world, where medicines are just products to be sold, you give the gift
of good health.
In a world, where hospitals work towards attaining business goals, you
sustain the original aim of the physician – to heal.
Dr. B Ramana Rao, in a world where the barometer of success is the
amount of accumulated material wealth, you stand tall as a symbol of the
triumph of seless service.
Your journey of giving began in 1973, right after you graduated from
Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. At a juncture in their lives when
most fresh medical graduates would have been planning their careers,
future specializations and private practice, you chose to establish a
Village Clinic in your village of T Begur to treat patients FREE of Cost.
You ttingly chose August 15th, our nation’s Independence Day, to
open your Clinic, as it frees needy patients from the monetary burden of
meeting rising healthcare costs.
From that moment, till today, 46 years later, your Village Clinic has
treated patients every Sunday, without a break, thus achieving the
distinction of being the world’s oldest and longest running Free Clinic.
While unfailingly devoting your every Sunday to the Clinic, you did not
lose sight of the need to grow professionally, and completed your MD
in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in 1980 from Bangalore Medical
College. Since then your ascent to pre-eminence has been meteoric. You
became a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Diabetology, a Fellow of the
International College of Angiology, a Fellow of the Academy of General
Education, Manipal, and a Fellow of the Society of Electro-Cardiology,
while also being life member of the Association of Physicians of India,
the Association of Medical Specialities and the Cardiological Society of
India. You are a sought after speaker in medical conferences and have
published several articles in national and international magazines and
journals. However, all the professional acclaim that has come your way
over the years did nothing to change your essential self. To the people of
T Begur, you remained the same friendly neighbourhood doctor whom
they could count onto keep them in good health.
Your Village Clinic is an exemplar of the true ethos of medical practice,
and how the provision of basic healthcare can prevent the advent and
spread of disease.
Your patients are not only diagnosed and advised of their ailments but
also given necessary medications, procedures such as nebulization,
and even fresh hot meals, completely free of cost. More than a hundred
patients undergo free cataract surgeries, every month, regaining the
precious gift of sight.
The long queue of a thousand and more that builds up overnight every
Sunday outside your Clinic bears clear testimony to the abiding faith
and trust that you have earned from your patients, not to speak of
their abundant love and affection. No amount of nancial or material
remuneration can compare with this and, in that, you are truly blessed
and deservedly so.
Over the last four and a half decades, more than two million underserved
patients have gained good health thanks to your Village Clinic.
What is even more laudable is that you were able to inspire your entire
family to follow in your footsteps and be co-travellers in your journey
of giving. Your two sons Dr. Charit and Dr. Abhijit, daughters in law
Dr. Shanthini Vijaysuriyar and Mrs. Jahnavi Bhograj, are part of the
dedicated team that works with you at your Clinic. Your wife, Hema, of
course, has always been by your side as a staunch pillar of support.
Your philanthropy does not end at providing free treatment to the poor.
The 350 villages in the vicinity of T. Begur have benetted tremendously
in various ways thanks to your many initiatives.
You have built around 700 toilets in and around Begur for those who live
below the poverty line, and provided them with soaps and toothpaste to
enable them to practice better personal hygiene habits.
You have adopted 50 village schools where you provide free uniforms,
books and furniture.
You have taken much-needed measures to ameliorate water supply in
the region, by having borewells dug and interlinked to meet the needs of
sixteen villages.
You have had streetlights installed in two villages.
You started a ‘Walk with Dignity’ programme, under which you provide
senior citizens with sturdy aluminium walking sticks.
The list of the ways in you make a positive difference to people’s lives
is long, and more than can be accommodated in this citation. The fore-
mentioned instances, we trust, will serve to provide a glimpse of what lies
beneath the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Dr. Rao, you are the living example of why the practice of medicine has
always been called a ‘noble profession’. You are a legend in your own
right and an inspiration to every young and aspiring medical professional.
Your work has been recognized in several ways. Among the many awards
that have been bestowed upon you are the Padma Shri in 2010, which
made you the ninth Physician in Karnataka to receive the honour; and
the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, the highest State Honour, in the eld
of Medicine.
Your selessness instills in us a deep sense of awe, pride and joy. And it
is with a great sense of honour and humility that we confer upon you the
Citizen Extraordinaire Award for being a great son of the city, who is yet
its most humble citizen.
